NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It began with a telephone name from Janice Parker, a New Orleans girl whose son was locked up on the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.
Parker instructed Richard Webster, an investigative reporter for Professional Publica and Verite, that she was anxious in regards to the well being and security of her son, Kentrell.
Kentrell had been convicted of homicide in 1999 and sentenced to life in jail. However In 2010, he was significantly injured in a prison-sponsored soccer sport and have become a quadriplegic, needing around-the-clock care.
In November of 2023, U.S. District Decide Shelly Dick dominated that Angola’s inmate well being care system amounted to “merciless and strange punishment,” in violation of the inmates’ Constitutional rights. The State has appealed that call to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Courtroom of Appeals and is awaiting a call.
