THE HOLD HER LIFELESS BODY IN MY HANDS WAS THE SCARIEST THING I’VE EVER HAD TO GO THROUGH. CHRISTIAN AND HIS FAMILY HAD ONLY BEEN ON THE BEACH FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES. THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, WHEN THINGS TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORSE, THE FAMILY ASKED US NOT TO SHOW THE LITTLE GIRL’S FACE. SHE WAS LAYING ON HER BACK IN THE WATER WHEN I SEEN HER. I RAN OUT THERE TO GO GET HER AND I PULLED HER OUT OF THE WATER. THE TEN YEAR OLD WAS WAS PLAYING IN THE WATER WITH THE SIBLING WHEN A WAVE KNOCKED HER OVER, SENDING HER UNDERWATER. SHE WAS NOT WEARING A LIFE JACKET AT THE TIME. SHE WAS FOAMING AT THE MOUTH. SHE WAS LOOKING AT ME, BUT SHE WAS UNRESPONSIVE AT THAT MOMENT. A GOOD SAMARITAN ON THE BEACH WHO HAPPENED TO BE A NURSE, STARTED GIVING THE TEN YEAR OLD CPR FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. MINUTES LATER, SHE WAS AIRLIFTED TO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, WHERE SHE IS NOW UNDERGOING TREATMENT. SHE’S DOING OKAY. UM. SHE’S RESPONSIVE. UM, SHE OPENED HER EYES TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE YESTERDAY. UM, SHE SQUEEZED MY HAND. HE BELIEVES GRAND ISLE SHOULD DO MORE TO REMIND PARENTS OF THE DANGERS, AND TO WATCH THEIR CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SIGNS ABOUT THE RIPTIDES.
